P-TECH is a school model designed to prepare young people with the academic, technical, and professional skills required for 21st-century jobs and ongoing education. P-TECH schools' mission is to close the gap between young people's ambitions for college and careers and the specific skills needed by employers in high-growth, in-demand industries.
"P-TECH is about providing students the opportunity to pursue their academic and career goals," said P-TECH Administrator Martin Sanchez. "The expectation is that students will work hard to meet their current and long-term goals."
P-TECH offers a no-cost pathway to parents or students that will lead to post-secondary credentials and is an experience that encourages students to continue their post-secondary education and serves students least likely to attend college and provides an opportunity to receive both a high school diploma and a credential and associate degree
Currently, the P-TECH Healthcare program, in its first year of implementation, has established partnerships with Citizens Medical Center and Victoria College. Students can earn a certified nurse aide certificate, college credit towards an Associate in Science degree, or an Associate Degree in Nursing. The P-TECH Healthcare program is located at Victoria East High School.
In 2021, VISD will offer Computer Science P-TECH and Education and Training P-TECH in partnership with the University of Houston-Victoria. The Computer Science P-TECH and Education and Training P-TECH will be located at Victoria West High School (VWHS). Students district-wide are eligible to sign up for the P-TECH of their choice.
"P-TECHs combine academic, technical, and career learning coupled with real-world, hands-on experiences," said Director of Innovation Melissa Correll. "Adding the Computer Science and Education and Training pathways at VWHS will provide more choices for students to pursue their passions for the future."
Recruitment efforts target all Victoria ISD eighth grade students.
