New Faces

Students and parents across the district will notice new faces in many campus assistant principal positions in the 2022-2023 school year. Assistant principals play an important role on campuses every day as they work alongside the principal and tend to campus and student needs, activities, services, and so much more. We are excited to welcome some new faces and some familiar faces in new places who are committed to #TeamVISD and #LeadingTowardsGenuisInVISD

Let’s give a warm welcome to the following new assistant principals: 

Leah Klemcke, Crain Elementary

Klemcke comes to Crain Elementary from the VISD Career & Technology Education, where she served as the CTE Curriculum Coordinator and Instructional Coach. She has been with VISD for five years and has served in many educational capacities throughout the years. Klemcke joins Principal Yasmina St. Jean on the campus leadership team at Crain Elementary. 

Jennifer Garnett, DeLeon Elementary

Garnett will join Principal Jennifer McIntyre at DeLeon Elementary, beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. Garnett comes from Patti Welder Middle School, where she was an assistant principal. She has also been a counselor and teacher within VISD. She has over a decade of education experience throughout both the elementary and secondary levels.

Holly Birmingham, Dudley Elementary

Birmingham, who began work as an Assistant Principal at Dudley during the 2021-2022 school year, is a Dudley Unicorn to the core, having previously served as an Instructional Coach at Dudley Elementary and brings more than nearly two decades of educational experience.  Birmingham will complement the work of Principal Michelle Sturm.

Cory Bena, Shields Elementary

Bena is trading his Schorlemmer Bear hat for the deep blue waters as a Shields Shark! He will join Principal Kelly Gabrysch as the campus implements the personalized learning pathway in grades K-5 for the 2022-2023 school year. Bena has been an elementary teacher for seven years. 

Lucy Munoz, Vickers Elementary 

Munoz joins VISD and Vickers Elementary with almost a decade of educational experience. She joins Principal Troy White to lead the lions into a fun new school year!

Ann Avila, Patti Welder Middle School

Avila’s passion for innovation is moving from the district level to the campus level, where she will be Assistant Principal for Patti Welder Middle School, a personalized learning campus. She previously served as an Innovation Specialist working with the STEM pathway campuses. Avila brings over two decades of educational experience that spans several campus roles. She joins Principal Larry Rodriquez in leading the PWMS Panthers through an amazing 2022-23 school year.

Chris Henk, STEM Middle School Academy

Henk, having previously served as an AP at Liberty Academy Credit Recovery, now joins STEM Middle School Academy. He was also nominated by his peers for showing commitment to going above and beyond and selected as the May 2022 Champion of the Month. Henk brings a decade of educational experience from the classroom to campus administration to his new role. He joins new STEM Academy Principal Denise Moreno and Stroman Middle School Principal Larry Cantu on the campus leadership team. 

Shannon Sawyer, STEM Middle School Academy

Sawyer joins the STEM Middle School Academy having previously served as a Curriculum Coordinator who focused on science for the VISD Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability Department. Sawyer has been with VISD for four years, previously working with Goliad ISD and Corpus Christi ISD. She joins new STEM Academy Principal Denise Moreno and Stroman Middle School Principal Larry Cantu on the campus leadership team. 

Micah Hernandez, Victoria West High School

Hernandez joins Victoria West High School as an Assistant Principal, previously serving as an Assistant Principal at Stroman Middle School. Hernandez has been with VISD for seven years as an Instructional Coach and District Curriculum Coordinator and previously worked with Flour Bluff High School as a Classroom Teacher. She joins the new principal Dr. Tonya Patterson at Victoria West High School on the campus administration team.

Shawn Ruby, Victoria West High School

Ruby joins VWHS as an Assistant Principal with 16 years of education experience, most recently as the Dean of Student Services and as a Classroom Teacher in the Alvin ISD. He joins the new principal Dr. Tonya Patterson at Victoria West High School on the campus administration team.

Tyler Cleland, Victoria West High School 

Cleland joins the West Warriors campus administration team and new principal Dr. Tonya Patterson at Victoria West High School.  He arrives in Victoria with eight years of educational experience.
