AVID Continues to Grow in VISD

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program we partner with that is offered in the form of an elective course. AVID is a program that not only prepares students for academic success but contributes to them Finding Their “And.”

The AVID program is an incredible opportunity for students who want to succeed in school and outside of academics. The program is not just another task on a student’s to-do list but a valuable elective course that aligns with campus goals. AVID equips students with the skills and tools they need to excel in challenging academic courses and prepares them for college and career success.

In addition to academic support, AVID helps students develop critical life skills that are essential for success. Students learn problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Another key benefit of the AVID program is that it creates a sense of community among students. Students in the program work together and support one another, creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This helps students stay motivated and engaged in their studies, while also building valuable social skills.

In our district, AVID is offered on all secondary campuses and at Torres Elementary. Starting in the 2022-23 school year, all 6th graders take AVID to help transition to middle school. AVID helps these students with their study skills, organizational skills, writing skills, speaking skills, collaboration skills, and reading skills, and provides them with tutorials twice a week.

The power of AVID lies in its ability to impact students in the AVID elective course and throughout the campus by providing teaching practices and academic behaviors in all classrooms. Our 6th-grade teachers are working hard to incorporate AVID strategies in their classrooms, including filling out their planners with pertinent information so there is communication that parents and guardians can see, and emphasizing writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading strategies throughout the school year. This helps students develop good habits and prepares them for success in all of their classes.

Overall, the AVID program is an excellent resource for students who want to prepare for college and career success. AVID provides academic support, life skills development, and a sense of community that can help students thrive in school and beyond.
