School Matters

At the Board Excellence Awards held in April, we had the honor of celebrating the remarkable achievements of our students at all of our campuses.

The Board Excellence Award recognizes and awards students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, attendance, and conduct. Additionally, the Growing in Genius Award is designed to highlight students who not only make academic progress but also embody the character traits outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate.

Student selection is based on an individual's academic, attendance, and conduct record. Awards are given to eligible students in grades five through 12. Students in grades six through 12 must be enrolled in at least one honors, gifted and talented, pre-advanced placement, advanced placement, or dual credit class.

One striking observation from this year's awards ceremony was the significant overlap between academic excellence and involvement in athletics and fine arts for students at Victoria East and West High Schools.

At Victoria East High School, an impressive 68% of the recognized students were actively engaged in athletics, fine arts, or both. Similarly, at Victoria West High School, a remarkable 78% of the awardees were involved in these enriching extracurricular pursuits.

The correlation between participation in extracurricular activities and academic success cannot be overlooked. Engaging in activities such as sports, music, drama, and art not only fosters personal growth and development but also instills valuable skills such as time management, teamwork, and discipline. These attributes undoubtedly contribute to students' overall academic performance.

Our schools offer an array of opportunities for students to get involved, catering to a wide range of interests and passions. Whether it's joining a sports team, participating in band or choir, or immersing oneself in the vibrant world of theater and visual arts, there is something for everyone.

For students eager to explore the plethora of extracurricular activities available to them, our campuses provide ample resources and avenues for discovery. From informational sessions to club fairs and online platforms, students can easily access information regarding the various clubs, teams, and organizations they can join.

In essence, the Board Excellence Awards not only applaud academic achievement but also recognize the holistic development of our students. By actively participating in athletics, fine arts, and other extracurricular pursuits, students not only enrich their high school experience but also lay the foundation for future success, both inside and outside the classroom.
