Bailey zappe

Victoria East High School and the entire Victoria ISD community would like to congratulate VEHS alum Bailey Zappe on his outstanding college career and wish him luck as he prepares for the Reese’s Senior Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, and the 2022 NFL Draft to be held from Thursday, April 28 to Saturday, April 30.

Zappe, a 2017 VEHS graduate, had more than 4,300 yards and 52 touchdowns in his senior year of high school. After becoming college football’s leading passer in 2020 at Houston Baptist University, Zappe transferred to Western Kentucky for the 2021-22 season.

This year, the 6-foot-1, 220 pounds quarterback broke two FBS records, most passing yards and touchdowns in a single season, and finished the season with 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns. These marks topped previous records of 5,833 yards set by Texas Tech’s B.J. Symons in 2003 and 60 touchdowns set by LSU’s Joe Burrow in their 2019 national championship season.

The Western Kentucky senior also recently received the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award. First established in 2021, the annual award is given to an offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.

Just a few weeks removed from achieving these great feats, Zappe has officially declared for the 2022 NFL Draft and is set to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is a great honor for players to be selected for. The annual game features the country’s best senior collegiate football players and top NFL draft prospects on teams representing the National and American. These teams are coached by the entire coaching staff of two NFL teams. The game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the University of South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The game will be showcased on the NFL Network.

In April, the NFL Draft will be held. The current NFL Draft TV Schedule is below. All times are eastern time. Viewers can watch the draft on the NFL Network and ESPN.

  • Round 1, Thursday, April 28 at 8 p.m.

  • Rounds 2 and 3, Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m.

  • Rounds 4 through 7, Saturday, April 30 at noon.

Please join VEHS and VISD in once again congratulating Zappe on his incredible achievements and wish him luck in the future.
