Victoria East’s UIL Academic Teams traveled to the Flour Bluff Island Tournament Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19. With teams composed of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors, the Titans left with many awards.

Two teams won academic trophies. The Science Team, composed of DJ Hopkins, Brylie Koopman and Yssa Aranez, won first place. The Math Team, with Koen Wertman, Hopkins and Koopman, won second place.

Many students competed in individual events as well and brought home medals and ribbons. Izabela De La Rosa and Rania Palmer won first and second place in Ready Writing, respectively. Koopman and Kiley Powell won first and third place in Spelling, respectively. Powell also won third place in Accounting. Wertman won fourth place in Math and Diego Cuellar won third place in Persuasive Speaking. Jack Yoast and Elijah Cruz won fifth and sixth place in Persuasive Speaking, respectively.

Natalie Bolch competed in multiple journalism events, placing first in Headline Writing, fourth in News Writing and sixth in Copy Editing. This was Bolch’s first time competing in these events.

Each event saw between eight to 12 students competing against each other.
