Victoria East and West High School competed in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s (THSWPA) Class 5A Division I State Championship in Corpus Christi on Saturday, March 19.

VEHS sent two powerlifters to state, Christen Hernandez, sophomore; and Alyssa Sauceda, junior. 

The two powerlifters made HERstory, becoming the first girls to bring home medals in school history. Sauceda brought home a state championship in the 198 LB class, becoming the second state champion in VEHS history. She broke all four state records, squatting 520 lbs, bench pressing 315 lbs and deadlifting 440 lbs for a total of 1275 lbs. Hernandez posted her best performance of the year to place third in the 181 LB class. 

VWHS sent six powerlifters to state, Analiese Umphres, freshman; Zariah Dean, sophomore; juniors Jazmeen Reyna, Karla Linares and Alyse Gonzalez; and Ashlyn Norton, senior.

Reyna brought home a state championship in the 97 LB class. She broke three state records, benching 165 lbs, deadlifting 260 lbs and reaching a total of 725 lbs. Umphres placed seventh in the 97 LB class, Norton placed eighth in the 105 LB class and Gonzales placed fourth in the 220 LB class.
